Area Rug Guidelines

Custom Area Rug Guidelines

  • All area rugs are custom and made to your specifications. The size of carpet is not limited to the traditional 4'x6,' 5'x7,' 6'x9' etc., we can make a rug that is 5'8" x 7'3" if that is what your room and setting will accommodate
  • The carpet style, colour and binding choice is also custom and the combinations are extensive
  • Our wool carpet line comes in 13'2" widths. Should your requirements measure in excess of 13'2" wide, please contact our customer service department and they will be able to assist you with the styles of carpet that are best suited for seaming
  • To make a room seem larger, use pale carpet colours or use a rug with a horizontal stripe pattern
  • To make a room seem smaller, use a darker carpet colour, this will anchor furnishings and provide a focal point in the room
  • An area rug can also be used to carve a large space into distinct areas. It is especially effective in an open concept space such as a living/dining room
  • Rotate area rugs occasionally to minimize the wear and tear in any one spot
  • If furniture lies on the rug, periodically move it 1" to 2" (one to two inches) in order to keep it from leaving depression marks in the rug.
  • A no-slip underpad is recommended to use under your area rug.

Choosing the Best Size of Area Rug

  • As a general rule, you want to leave at least 12" to 16" around the perimeter of the room to create contrast between the floor and the area rug. Anything smaller and the rug will look too insignificant.
  • You also need to think about the placement of the furniture in that room. For example, if you want to put an area rug under your dining room table, choose an area rug that is 4' wider and 4' longer to accommodate a chair being pulled back from the table.
  • Front legs of your furniture should sit on the area rug so the rug doesn't appear to "float" in the middle of the room.

Guidelines for Bindings

The Cotton, Linen and Faux Suede Bindings can show anywhere from ½" to 3" on-face for any runner or area rug.

Wall-to-Wall Installation

Find a reputable installer and have them measure your space to determine exactly what quantity to order.

Show your installer a carpet sample so that he/she can see the pile and carpet direction if applicable. Depending on the shape and size of the room this may dictate the direction in which the carpet is laid.
